Imperial Roman Testudo

The Roman Testudo, or Tortoise, was a formation widely used by the Roman Empire most notably during sieges such as that at Jerusalem or other walled cities.The concept behind the formation was for the legionaries to form in close order with interlocking shields such that the men were protected from the sides, front, and overhead by a linked wall of shields guarding them from various forms of missile fire as they advanced. We have presented the figures for this release such that a modular Testudo can be formed in any size desired by the collector with as few as six figures and no upward limit simply by expanding the frontage and depth as per the setup guide. For guidance on which figures go where, please view the setup guide which shows the layout and position of each figure. In addition, the front, left, and right rank figures can also be used in a non-Testudo display as a close order line of battle advancing towards the enemy.

Great War - French Infantry

The 34th Regiment of Infantry is one of the glorious regiments of the French Army dating all the way back to 1625 when it was first formed. During WWI the regiment served with the 34th Infantry Division throughout the war and participated in the Battles of Verdun, the Marne, and the Somme and that was just in 1916. They were engaged in all five years of the conflict.

Since we first came on the scene in 2007 with our stunning painted figure ranges featuring world class figure sculpts, we have been asked countless times by modellers and painters around the world if we would sell unpainted metal figure kit versions of our painted figures. We are happy to announce that the time has come and we are pleased to present our new range of beautifully sculpted unpainted metail figure kits. Some of these kits are brand new figures specifically sculpted to be produced as metal figure kits while others are some favorites of figures that we released previously as painted figures which have long been sold out. First Legion: Oooops!

Hello again, and welcome to July. The sun is shining and there's an almost tangible 'feel good factor' here in the UK just now, what with The British Lions and Andy Murray showing the rest of the world how to play their respective sports

This is my first post of the month and to be honest it's come about as the result of an oversight on my part. Nevertheless, given the month and the subject matter of the post it's actually quite appropriate that I should post it now rather than when I originally intended to

The subject matter comes from the FL newsletter for June and consists of their 'sneak peak' at one of the latest figures in their not inconsiderable pipeline, this magnificent mounted model of the infamous Roman general and Emperor, the one and only Julius Caesar after whom the month of July is named!

The First Legion post this month has a distinctly 'ancient' theme with a focus on a newly announced range and a sneak preview of some figures soon to be added to an already existing range that is proving very popular with collectors

First Legion is very pleased to announce our latest figure range, the World of the Greeks!!!  Following in the footsteps of the runaway success of our Glory of Rome range we are turning our talents to another range from the Ancient World, specifically Ancient Greece. Our initial launch covers Greek Hoplites, but the range will expand to Macedonian Phalanxes, Companion Cavalry, and enemies of Greece such as Darius and the mighty Persian Empire to name but a few. First Legion: Early Germans 2

For the fourth post of June I've elected to share with you some of my excitement at the news that First Legion have announced the release of the second batch of Early Germans in their Glory of Rome series

Following hot on the heels of the first half a dozen or so figures, and the delightful little vignette, I'm sure these latest figures are set to arouse quite a lot of interest

Available direct from the manufacturer, some of the figures shown will be retailing at $59.95 whilst others will be a little steeper at $64.95, rising to a relatively lofty $69.95 for the more intricately detailed pieces. They are also available in the UK from Maison Militaire, as well as one or two other places, one of which is previewed in a forthcoming post so I will say more about that anon. Prices will be £55, £60 and £65 respectively

First Legion: Update!

I've already posted about several forthcoming releases from First Legion this month but when I received their latest newsletter in my inbox the other day I decided to post this update

First up are a few rather delightful looking terrain pieces which, if you have room for them, can be used to add a little First Legion flourish to your displays. Here's the first of several images, together with the company's own description of the piece in question

The latest item for our Buildings and Terrain series takes us back to the Battle of Stalingrad with the first building release in our new modular style diorama sets. This brick building is heavily battle damaged with the entire rear of the building completely blown off thus exposing the interior   

This building works extremely well when used with our other modular terrain tiles and multiples can be setup back to back giving the look of a full, but heavily damaged building.  This type of building was found all over Stalingrad in neat rows and thus can be used in various sections of the city  

Though designed for Stalingrad, it can be used for many other theaters of the war as well, including Western Europe. This extremely detailed building comes with the following features:

 2 x separate battle damaged doors
3 x separate large rubble pieces
1 x small side building tile roof
1 x bag of loose rubble

In front of the building in the last picture you can see a section of cobbled road which is just one of a series of modular terrain pieces the company is producing, all of which are pictured below and described by the company in the accompanying text

Our new modular terrain boards were specifically designed to display our figures on and can be used in combination with one another to make a simple one piece shelf display or to create much larger settings. They have been designed to work for all First Legion figure ranges from Rome, through the Napoleonic period, right the way up to WWII and everything in between

At 15" X 8" these boards are large enough to accommodate quite a number of figures, especially if you happen to collect Napoleonics or Romans, or are thinking of starting up a collection of their new Renaissance figures, and have them grouped together in units several ranks deep. I think they'd look mighty handsome!

Finally, I thought I'd include a couple of images from the Workbench section of the FL website which features, amongst other things, some soon to be released Japanese cavalry for their Samurai range and a Germanic warband, looking suitably ferocious and savage, to pitch against their splendid Roman forces. I can't wait to see these rolling off the production line

We are very pleased to provide this sneak peek of our upcoming Mounted Takeda cavalry release for our Age of the Samurai figure range. Fans of this range have waited almost two years since our last release and should be very pleased to hear that there will be not just one, but two major Samurai releases coming in 2012, both of which focus on the Takeda clan. The first of these features 6 different Mounted Takeda Samurai charging at Nagashino

Now that we've officially launched the Glory of Rome figure range, let's take a quick look at just a few of the of many figures that will be added to this range over the coming months. Most specifically, the figures up next for the range, a big group of fierce Germanic Warriors ranging from the simple peasant to the noble elite
